Embarassment in the McDonald's Line

Kathryn Mitschelen
Any parent can think of a time when their children embarrassed them. Usually, these incidents are not on purpose, but are the act of an innocent child making an innocent comment. Only, as parents these innocent, poorly-timed comments make us want to crawl into a whole.

I have had many embarrassing moments so far in the course of parenthood, and I assume there will be many more to come. But one of the most memorable occurred when my daughter was just about two years old. It may be so memorable because it was one of the first really embarrassing moments I had as a parent.

I was going to visit a friend with my daughter. We were standing in the McDonald's line early on a Saturday morning waiting to place our order. I was holding her, so she was high up, even with the head of the person in front of us.

Now, the person in front of us had a mop of gray/black hair like nothing I had ever seen before. I wasn't thinking too much about it until my daughter started getting excited and trying to reach for the person's hair. When I pulled her back, she starts yelling, "I wanna pet the doggie. I wanna pet the doggie."

The person turns around, along with multiple other people looking, as my daughter continues wailing how she wants to pet the doggie and trying to reach for the person's hair. We quickly excused ourselves from the situation, and I never looked back!
