Embarking On a Cruise from Santos, Brazil

What You Should Know

Anna Swan
Santos is the busiest port in all of South America, but doesn't receive rave reviews as the most popular city. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Santos was the point of entry for the bubonic plague into Brazil in 1899. A much happier claim to fame is that Santos is also the home of Edison Arantes do Nescient - better known as Pelé, the best Brazilian footballer of all time. Santos is just a comfortable drive inland away from the capital city of Brazil. One of the largest cities in the world, São Paulo has sights and tastes to please even the most discerning traveler. Unfortunately, the overall Brazilian crime rate continues to rise, so safety is always a concern of the traveler while in this country. The language of Brazil is Portuguese, and the currency is the Brazilian Real (BRL).

If you're embarking on your sea cruise from Santos, Brazil, you likely flew into the São Paulo Guaralhos airport. A taxi to Santos port could run as high as $100.00 USD. A bus is much more affordable at around $15.00 USD. The trip takes about 45 to 70 minutes, depending on traffic out of São Paulo. If lodging is required or desired, Santos is home to Mendez Plaza Hotel and the Mendez Panorama, Parke Balneario, and the Caicara Hotel. Due to the location of the busy Parke Balneario, travelers have complained of noise.

While in Santos, you can visit the Municipal Aquarium and see quite an array of sea life and plant life from the region. If you prefer to take in the countryside on foot, the Quilombo Valley offers endless hiking trails along the river and various mountain peaks. The biggest tourist attraction in the region is Monte Serrat. If you're willing to take another short drive, the Ipanema Churrascaria (Rodizio Restaurant) is located on Rua Visconde de Piraja. The price is an exceptional value at only R$29.00.

When I read ". Santos is just a comfortable drive inland away from the capital city of Brazil. One of the largest cities in the world, São Paulo has sights and tastes to please even the most discerning traveler", I wonder if I can trust the rest. First, Santos is "a comfortable drive inland away from the capital city of Brazil"-- it can't be a drive INLAND if it is on the coast. Second, while "One of the largest cities in the world, São Paulo has sights and tastes ..." may be true, it is not now nor has it ever been the captial city of Brazil. Brazil's first capital, dating to the 16th century, was São Salvador de Bahia dos Todos Santos, now called just 'Salvador', it's seconf capital was Rio de Janeiro, and its current capital, a city built 'from scratch' in the late 1950s and 60s, is Brasilia. São Paulo is Brazil's major economic center, but had never been its capital... nor farther out to sea than Santos!
