Embarrassing Parent Moments

When Bodily Functions Embarrass Your Children and Their Guests

Lissa Bagley
Children are easily embarrassed by their parents. I am still haunted by some of the parents did that embarrassed me. I had just started dating a guy when I left my purse in his car. The day after Thanksgiving he came to my mother's house to return it to me. The doorbell rang and through butterflies of excitement I shouted to my mother that he was here. I made a point to do this because she tends to walk around in her underwear. I opened the door and we sat on the couch for a few minutes talking. My mother walked up the stairs and right in the doorway of the room we were sitting in, lifted her shirt and scratched her belly like a pregnant woman scratches her large belly, and let out one of the loudest burps. She looked into the room, turned a little bit red in the cheeks, and said "Oh, excuse me. Why didn't you tell me we had guests?" I have never forgotten that moment. I still remind my mother of that moment.

My oldest daughter is now the recipient of embarrassing parent moments. She had one of her little friends stay the night over the summer. I woke up in the middle of the night with a horrible stomach ache and shuffled into the kitchen with my eyes half shut to get some Pepto to help settle my aching stomach. I chewed the two tablets, drank a glass of water, and let out one of the loudest farts I have ever heard. I even leaned over a bit and grabbed my stomach. It was not until I heard the giggles of little girls that I remembered that my daughter and her friend were in the living room watching movies when they should have been asleep.

Even though my daughter giggled at the time, she still reminds me of this moment every single time a friend comes over. She asks me "please don't fart in front of my friends again mom."
