Emerald Nut's "Robert Goulet" Ad

An AC Super Bowl Commercial Review

Khara E. House
Falling asleep at the office from a lack of midday energy may be more dangerous than we thought! In the humorous commercial from Emerald Nuts, an office worker drifts off into a three o'clock afternoon slumber when his "blood sugar and energy levels are low." As he does, a sneaky Robert Goulet descends from a rope into the man's office space. An announcer tells us that this is supposedly what happens when you get to that three p-m drowsy stage in your day. We then go on to witness Goulet terrorizing the office by messing with the office workers' stuff. He shreds files; throws papers around; eats post-it notes; does a jig on a woman's desk while kicking her supplies into the blue; and other office antics. Will nothing stop Robert Goulet?

Apparently, the energy provided by one handful of Emerald Nut's can.

As Goulet prepares to wreak havoc on yet another worker, we see the unsuspecting worker down a handful of the advertised nuts; the announcer tells viewers that this is "enough to keep Robert Goulet away . . . at least for today." When the worker seems to sense the presence of the office nemesis, we see Goulet drop back and go crawling away backwards on the ceiling. It seems the day is saved from Goulet (for the time being) . . . thanks to Emerald's Nuts.

This commercial is either a very good advertisement for a brand of nuts or a very good way to make viewers terrified of Robert Goulet. I'm going to go for the first option for this ad from Emerald Nuts. One may think that an angry boss was the worst thing you had to worry about after falling asleep on the job. This commercial takes that notion as throws it straight out the window as we watch the American entertainer known for his role in Broadway's Camelot act way out of the standard of a knight of the round table. One may think Goulet takes his antics a little too far when he pours a cup of coffee over some poor worker's computer keyboard. But hey, the officer nap-taker had it coming; that's what happens when you don't keep your energy up. So what should you do to make sure Robert Goulet never gets a shot at your hard drive and paperwork? Emerald Nut's asks us to believe that their nuts will save us. Whether you believe it or not is up to you; however, I'd think twice about daring Goulet into his unsavory habits by dozing off at your desk!

Will Emerald Nut's really protect you from Robert Goulet? Probably not . . . but the point of this commercial was more a chance for a good laugh and memorable marketing than real protection from even the most harmful of office ne'er-do-wells. But hey . . . it never hurts to try new things. In this case, it probably couldn't hurt to have a trusty can of Emerald Nuts handy!

I love Robert Goulet commercials. One of my all time favorites was one where this lady saw Robert Goulet singing "It's Impossible" everywhere she drove. She saw him at the car wash and he was in the toll collector booth. It was a riot!

While I hate commercials in general and studiously try to avoid them, occasionally one or two slip past my radar. For instance, I am genuinely tickled by those Geico caveman commercials. Frankly, I'd watch Goulet in just about anything. I've always enjoyed him, but his guest appearance on The Simpsons convinced me he's got one of the best self deprecating senses of humor around.

True . . . but then you run the risk of being Gouleted . . .

Yes, nuts are good, but so is a little sleeping bag under your desk. The 3pm sleepies can be brutal!
