Emergenc-C Multi-Vitamin Plus Cherry-Pomegranate

Why Didn't They Throw in the Kitchen Sink Too to Make This Seem Healthy?

Susan Abe
Remember Mary Poppins, the movie, and that song with the lyrics, "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down?" Well, I don't need Julie Andrews to tell me that it's easier to get kids to take sweetened medicine than something bitter or even bland, but I really didn't realize the number of adults who would find it necessary as well.

Before you sip your next fizzy vitamin-drenched Shirley Temple, flip that package over and read the ingredients. Product ingredients are listed in order to most to least. Fructose - levorotatory ketose sugar, a sugar even sweeter then table sugar - happens to be the very first ingredient listed in your Emergen-C Multi-Vitamin Plus Cherry-Pomegranate "vitamin" pack.

Between an ordinary, but boring, multivitamin and a glass of orange juice, you and your loved ones can get the same amount of Vitamin C for about 10% of what you're paying for sugar and bubbles in the form of Emergen-C brand items. I can understand this for a 7-year old, but I seriously doubt all these skyrocketing sales are to elementary school students. Besides, most of us are over 21. If we want a bubbly cocktail that costs a lot and makes us feel better, what ever happen to a bar? You can get oranges and limes and other sources of Vitamin C there, too.

My point is, enjoy your sugar treat the same way I enjoy my M&Ms. At least I'm not claiming to treat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) with my candy.
