When outfitting a school with emergency backpacks, the contents of the bags need to be the same. The users need to be able to rely on the contents of the bag in case of a time sensitive emergency. If an item is missing, it could be dangerous or at least increase the stress, in an already stressful situation.
A backpack or other easily portable bag will be needed. It is very helpful to have the same type bag for the whole school, so it is easily identifiable as an emergency bag. If it is brightly colored and clearly marked , it also helps identify the bag in a situation where seconds could count.
Contents will vary depending on the needs of the classroom. A up to date class list is an absolute must. It should be checked frequently because children move into and out of school districts. Special needs of students should be identified, such as medical issues. Classroom teacher buddies should be identified also, in case a teacher needs help or is injured. The list will be used to make sure everyone is accounted for during the evacuation or other emergency. A class list with photos is a good idea, in case another adult needs to take charge of the class.
Name tags can also be included in the bag to put on the children to help keep track of them. Some important medical items to include are sterile bandages, gloves and baggies, a CPR mask, and a frosting tube in case of a diabetic emergency. Items for safety include a flashlight and extra batteries stored in a plastic bag, duct tape for sealing windows in case of a chemical emergency, a brightly colored vest and a whistle for directing students. Pencils and school specific forms needed for evacuation should also be included. A specific map route for evacuations should be one of the forms. Teachers can also include activities to keep students entertained while they are waiting, such as word searchers or a book to read to the class.

Post a CommentI just wanted to add- snacks would be good to have in these too. If an emergency keeps kids stranded in a classroom for a period of time it would be good for them to have something to eat.
This is really good! All teachers should read this and assemble emergency backpacks.
