Emergency and Disaster Preparedness: Sanitation and Toilet

Mary Martin
Not something we like to think about, however, something that is very important to think about and to plan for is sanitation in times of emergency and disaster. You know how preceding every storm the groceries are crowded with people all in line buying milk, bread and toilet paper, well it is clear that people do not keep these (or in most cases) disaster supplies on hand. This is not wise. Sanitation is very important in times of emergency and disaster. A little planning and preparation in this area can help you and your family be much more comfortable.

Sanitation Supplies

Having these items in your home disaster supply kit may offer an increased level of sanitation and comfort. You may be able to use less water, and to clean up more easily by using a small basin for personal cleanliness than by trying to pour water into an established sink or basin. Making preparation for personal hygiene and comfort is wise, adds to your personal comfort and health. Add items that you feel would be needed by you and family members.

Water, bottled or stored

Hand sanitizer

Moist towelettes

Toilet paper

Personal needs items

Toilet

These supplies may be necessary for comfort, safety and sanitation. Consider which method of alternative toilet may be most feasible for your situation and plan accordingly. Obtain the needed items and store them all together in a safe place with your home disaster supply kit. Your location, apartment or home may guide your decision in this matter, but, do plan ahead, obtain the needed supplies and be prepared.

Manually flushing the toilet

This is easily done with a bucket and enough water to cause the toilet to flush. Just place fill the bucket with enough water to match that usually stored in the toilet tank, and, pour it quickly into the center of the toilet bowl. The force of the water should cause the toilet to flush.

Portable toilet

These portable toilets are available where camping supplies are sold. These portable toilets do not need much space, supplies and don't flush.

Collection bags

Chemical toilet

You may purchase a chemical toilet and the necessary supplies where some camping supplies are sold, or, at shops that carry alternative sanitation supplies.

Home made portable toilet

A home made portable toilet may be created by attaching a toilet seat to a bucket. It may take some cleaver crafting, a little research, and making sure that the bucket is sturdy, a safe level, and that the seat can indeed be attached so that it doesn't create a safety hazard.

There are many companies which offer sanitation supplies and many kids of portable toilets and supplies. Two that I found are Preparedness.com and Are You Prepared.com. Both of these companies offer a variety of items at a wide range of prices to help you plan for an emergency toilet. I failed to research many of the camping sites which I'm sure would also offer portable toilet options, such as Cabella's, Coleman, or Gander Mountain.
