The most important item is definitely water and plenty of it for you and your family. Always stock up with cases of bottled water to ensure you have enough because you might be stranded in your home for days or even weeks depending on the storm or how much flooding occurs in your area. Water in your area will probably be unusable due to intense flooding and debris in the water that could affect the water systems in your area.
Non-Perishable food is another important area because you obviously need food to survive. Obviously you should only use canned food items or resalable items because you won't be having access to a refrigerator so you need food that won't spoil. Canned soups, vegetables, fruit are all very good ideas for your hurricane emergency kit.
First aid kits and flashlights are also very essential for once the power goes out and if you have any injuries. Make sure you always have spare batteries inside your hurricane emergency kit to ensure you will always have a flashlight to use. Another good idea is to keep a battery powered radio with it as well. This way you can tune into any important news information about the hurricane.
Dry clothes would also be a pretty good idea incase your primary pair of clothing get wet. Incase of your house flooding and everything inside gets submerged in water, this way you can always have a dry pair so your not stuck in the same old cold wet clothes until the storm passes. It can vary by how bad the storm is and you might not ever need a dry pair of clothes but at the same time, you just never know. You should use some type of vacuum bags to ensure they are always dry.
Blankets and pillows don't necessarily have to be inside your emergency hurricane kit but you should always have some pillows and blankets handy incase you have to seek shelter inside a basement or if your stranded in a part of the house without beds or furniture. You will at least have something to sleep on and cover up with in this kind of situation. You should also you vacuum bags for these as well to ensure they never get wet.
You can never fully predict how bad a hurricane will be so the best step to prepare is to make sure you always have an hurricane emergency kit somewhere in your home so you are prepared. In most cases it's recommended that you evacuate your town incase of a hurricane but some people would rather stay with their belongings. If that's the case for you, then you need to have a hurricane emergency kit.
