Emergency Snack

Be Prepared when the Beast Attacks

Tonya Smith
My husband and I were on a recent trip out into the country, when the hunger beast rared it's ugly head. We had left the house that day prepared with a mountain of hunger curbing snacks. We tried to keep it as healthy as we could. Below are some of the snacks we brought along. What I keep thinking about is, what we would have gotten if we had stopped at the local hamburger grease pit, or not eaten anything at all. I hope that if you are stuck out there and hunger strikes, that you will have thought ahead and packed some of these tasty treats.

Bananas are a great stand alone snack. They come with their own wrapping and they are quite tasty. They are also full of potassium, which is good for heart and muscle health.

If you take those bananas and want something more substantial, add peanut butter. Just slather a good teaspoonful of peanut butter onto the banana and enjoy a real treat.

Or how about homemade trail mix. It is so easy and good for you, that you will not want to wait to try it out.

1 part pecans
1 part almond slivers
1 part walnuts
1 part coconut
1 part raisins or cranberries
2 parts peanuts

Mix all ingredients together and store in a zip top bag. Good for about a month or so. Check the nuts; they can become rancid and not so tasty.

I hope these recipes help you out when you find yourself in need of a snack, but also want to keep it healthy.
