Emergencies can happen at any time of the day or night. Personal emergencies such as a heart attack or auto accident are something we become aware of immediately. Public emergencies are different. The system notification service on local TV requires that you are watching TV when the emergency notice is broadcast.

We may be unaware, and unable to take action until it's be too late. For instance, where will you be if a major fire breaks out in Mountain View like the recent gas explosion fire in San Bruno? Will you be at home 15 blocks away, at work, or two minutes from driving head on into the blaze? Where will your kids be?

What would happen if you received a notification ahead of time of situations that may threaten you or someone you love? It may not even be an immediate emergency such as a fire, flood or earthquake. It might be a notification of burglaries in your neighborhood, or an attacker who preys on joggers. Mountain View residents have access to a system that alerts citizens to these types of situations through a free system: AlertSCC.

Not long ago, the city of Morgan Hill used the system notification service to alert residents to a perpetrator attacking women in local store parking lots. It alerted residents who had signed up for the free service to be aware when they were out shopping of any suspicious situation.

Residents of Mountain View can sign up for the system notification service and receive free alerts via "cell phone, mobile device, email, or landline," according to AlertSCC. Go to AlertSCC.com and register free. The next time there is a public safety issue in your area, you will be the first to know.
