Eminem Double Take: Profanity and Oranges

Valerie Ferrari
Rebellious, violent, explicit, misogynistic and homophobic -- all words we have no problem associating with popular rapper Eminem, but in an interview with Anderson Cooper on "60 Minutes," the Grammy-award winner says that's not how he really is at home.

"I'm a parent, I have daughters. I mean, how would I really sound, as a person, walking around my house 'B-tch, pick this up.' You know what I mean? ... Profanity around my house? No," he told "60 Minutes" correspondent Anderson Cooper. (See the Video clip here).

Eminem has three children, his own daughter Hailie, who is now 15, and was sometimes included in some of his songs, like "Mockingbird," and two other adopted daughters, Lainey and Whitney.

"I'm not saying there's not glimpses of me in the music, there's not truth in things that I say, but this is my music, this is my art," he also said, presumably protecting his credibility as a rapper.

He also feels it is the responsibility of parents to protect their children's virgin ears. His songs with explicit lyrics come with warnings, and he told Cooper that parents should take the responsibility for their own kids.

According to the Detroit News, some of the footage in this interview was filmed at the end of July around Detroit. Eminem showed Cooper Anderson where he lived as a teenager; Gilbert's Lodge, where he had a job in the kitchen; the Burger King he frequently wrote rhymes in before hitting the big time; and Eminem's recording studio. The larger part of the interview took place in September after Eminem and Jay-Z's Yankee Stadium concerts.

Eminem also shows Anderson Cooper how to rhyme words with "orange." "People say that the word orange doesn't rhyme with anything and it pisses me off," Eminem says, "I can think of a lot of things that rhyme with orange," An example is: "I put my orange, four-inch, door-hinge in storage and ate porridge." It's easy, according to the rapper, you just "have to figure out the science to breaking down words."

Actually, for Eminem's edification, it's hardly anything to get uptight about. Just look in the Rhyming Dictionary -- it says there are no "perfect" rhymes for orange, but there are 105 near rhymes (hinge is one of them). Some of them are perfect rhymes if you use the French pronounciation of orange.

Just art? Okay...if he wants to use that justification.

Saw the interview as well - well-written recap.

Good piece...yes, they're near rhymes, which sort of count. As for the never-ending nonsense about hard-edged art/profanity and children, well, it's never-ending...Lenny Bruce was profane/obscene/SEEMINGLY prejudiced if one judges by the use of terms, and I wouldn't want my six-year-old hearing him. But Bruce had something to say. So does Eminem - sometimes (his song about trailer park girls is hilarious). Do you think they jumped on Shakespeare when they brought out a sheep's head on a pike to represent a decapitee?

I watched that interview, okay some of it and Val your comments were very restrained and I applaud you. "If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to." D. Parker

If he's not really like that why is he like that? Is that the sound of a cash register?

Cute article, but not sure what English class he was in because that is a terrible rhyme! :)

Let's face it, the guy makes a living being a potty mouth.

So it's just an act, he's not really like that. Well, I'm glad he cleared that up.

Being a parent he should realize how tough it is to protect kids from rotten language, and should contribute by cleaning up his mouth.
