Arkansas is safe for Petrino away from the stigma of Vick and the Falcons, and can we all just pray for Emmitt Thomas, what a mess he has on his hands now. First test is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 8-5 and first in the NFC South. If Emmit Thomas can show that he has the leadership and wisdom to get beyond all the talk and play football and beat the Buccaneers he has a chance for next season.
If he loses and loses again next weekend to Arizona, he doesn't have a chance. The Buccaneers will revamp the team to step away from Vick and start focusing back on winning games. That will mean a new coach not tainted by the old Falcons.
If Emmitt Thomas can pull out a win or two versus two good football teams here in the last two weeks of football, I believe he will show his worth in overcoming all the media, and doing what all great coaches do, win football games.
Emmitt Thomas has been a major part of the Falcons organization since his arrival in 2002. This veteran of 28 years in the NFL is very well experienced and liked. This will also make it hard to let him go if he shows his valor, but if he vaults, I see him falling back into the ranks of assistant coaches, just for a new look or image for the Atlanta Falcons. Emmitt is a good choice for the interim, but chances are that's all it will be.
