Emmy Awards Marred by Unfunny Ryan Seacrest and Tech Glitches

The Finale for Last Season Before This Year's Fall TV Begins

The Emmy Awards did not go as well this year as they have in the past. As Ryan Seacrest stated early in the show, he is not funny, this was very apparent throughout the show. After informing everyone of his lack of humor Ryan went on to identify the designers of everyone in the audience's clothes. Also there were many technical glitches in the broadcast, not just where they were parodying the Sopranos finale, where the audio was out and the camera was not focused on the correct area.

These were not the only errors though, Grey's Anatomy star, and Emmy Winner Katherine Heigl's name was mispronounced by the announcer when she was introduced. Another area where the show did not run smoothly was when Ellen DeGeneres was introducing, she began by informing the audience that she did not know what her topic was and that became obvious as she continued, she then introduced a string of comedic clips followed by clips of the comedians honoring Tom Snider, an awkward transition.

There were also a few mentions of Hayden Panettiere's (the cheerleader from Heroes) recent birthday, making her eighteen, the jokes are less funny, more perverted. There were tributes to both Roots and the Sopranos during the show, while the Roots tribute had meaning, the Sopranos tribute seemed more like a time-filler. There were many mentions of the stage being round and the audience being all around it, the winners and presenters always had their backs to someone, a poor design. The poor design is possibly because it is made from recyclable materials, as is the carpet, in an effort to help the environment.

However, despite all of the problems with the award show, it was not all bad. The comedians who presented helped add comedy where Seacrest couldn't and there weren't any fights between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee, or anyone else for that matter.

Overall the show was very good, not as good as previous years, but good anyways, and the awards were given out, which is the real purpose of the show: Jeremy Piven from Entourage won supporting actor in a comedy; Terry O'Quinn won supporting actor in a drama for his role in Lost; Jamie Pressly won supporting actress in a comedy for her role in My Name is Earl; Katherine Heigl from Grey's Anatomy won supporting actress in a drama; reality competition program was won by The Amazing Race; Robert Duvall won lead actor in a movie or miniseries for his role in Broken Trail; for her role in Prime Suspect, Helen Mirren won lead actress in a movie or miniseries; TV Movie was won by Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee; miniseries was won by Broken Trail; America Ferrara won lead actress in a comedy for her role in Ugly Betty; Ricky Gervais won lead actor in a comedy for his role in Extras; Sally Field won lead actress in a drama for her role in Brothers & Sisters; James Spader won lead actor in a drama for his role in Boston Legal; 30 Rock won comedy series; and the Sopranos won drama series.
