Emmy Awards to Select Emmy Winners Soon

Robert Dougherty
The Emmy awards are minutes away, and so are last minute Emmy awards predictions. The Emmy awards are centered on the red carpet now, but soon the attention will turn to who will win. For the 2009 Emmy awards, there are races that are very tight, but also ones that seem like foregone conclusions. Hopefully, for the Emmy awards' sake, there won't be as many foregone conclusions tonight.

The 2009 Emmy awards seem predictable in the two series categories, as Mad Men and 30 Rock are favored to repeat again. So the major suspense for the Emmy Awards may come in the acting categories, as last year's champions try to fend off some old and new challengers.

In the Emmy awards for comedy, Alec Baldwin may be an obvious choice for 30 Rock again, but critics and fans are pushing Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory as a dark horse candidate. For Best Actress, Tina Fey's only major competition appears to be Toni Collette, and possibly Christina Applegate.

The Best Supporting Actor Comedy Emmy Award revolves around Neil Patrick Harris, as he is expected to take the trophy in between breaks for his hosting duties. For Best Supporting Actress Comedy, the race may be the tightest of the night, involving the likes of Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Jane Krakowski and Kristin Chenoweth.

For the Emmy Awards in drama, the Best Actor race is very close once again, with Bryan Cranston trying to hold off challengers like Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, Michael C. Hall, Gabriel Byrne and Simon Baker. Best Actress is projected to easily go to Glenn Close for a second straight year, though Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss hopes to ride the Mad Men tide to an upset.

Best Supporting Actor is another close race, as Michael Emerson tries to get his first Emmy for Lost, while Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul hopes to pull an upset, just like Cranston did last year - though William Hurt and William Shatner have star power on their side. Best Supporting Actress has Dianne Wiest trying to defend her title for In Treatment.

The Reality Categories are under less of a microscope, now that the reality TV hosts aren't hosting the Emmy Awards again - to the relief of many. For TV Movies, Grey Gardens is expected to dominate the night. In the Variety competition, Saturday Night Live tries to snap The Daily Show's winning steak.

Many fans hope that the Emmy Awards don't screw things up with their choices this year, by either picking the same old winners or choosing undeserving ones. Of course, fans have differing tastes on who is deserving and who's not - for this fan's money, the greatest crime this year would be Hurt or Shatner winning over Emerson.

At long last, the 2009 Emmy Awards will settle the disputes on stage, as Neil Patrick Harris kicks things off at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
