In the beginning, the 2009 Emmy winners were fairly surprising, however. It looked like it could be a night of upsets, starting with Kristin Chenoweth winning Best Supporting Actress Comedy for the late, beloved Pushing Daisies, over SNL favorites Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig. Chenoweth got the Emmys off to an emotional start with her teary-eyed shock.
Critics and audiences were probably a little less pleased with the next upset, in which Jon Cryer upset host Neil Patrick Harris in Supporting Actor Comedy. Then when Tina Fey actually lost an Emmy for once, as Toni Collette took Best Actress Comedy for her multiple roles in United States of Tara, it looked like no favorite was safe.
From then on in, the Emmy winners for 2009 all looked about the same as in 2008. Jeff Probst won for Reality Host and The Amazing Race took yet another Reality Show Emmy. Grey Gardens, as expected, took most of the TV Miniseries/Movie awards, for the movie, Jessica Lange, and Ken Howard. Little Dorrit cleaned up in the Miniseries category.
The Emmy winners 2009 in Variety were headed up by The Daily Show yet again. Then when it came time for drama, the long overdue Michael Emerson and 24 head-of-state Cherry Jones took home the supporting trophies. After that, the 2009 Emmy Awards repeated the exact same ending as last year.
Bryan Cranston and Glenn Close got their second straight Best Actor and Actress awards, 30 Rock stayed perfect in the Best Comedy category, and Mad Men took home Best Drama Emmy number 2. In the series category, and in all the lead actor ones, the results were exactly the same as in 2008 - except for Fey losing to Collette.
The Emmy winners 2009 were otherwise fairly distributed between shows. No show or movie won more than three awards last night, with 30 Rock, Mad Men, Grey Gardens and Little Dorrit receiving three each.
Things weren't boring at first, with Harris leading the way - despite being hijacked by Dr. Horrible at one point - and with early stunners for Chenoweth, Cryer and Collette. But after most of Harris's bits were done, and once last year's winners started to keep coming up on stage, the Emmy Awards 2009 may have felt all too much like a repeat.

Post a CommentIt baffles me how the winners are the same
year after year, especially when there are so many other talented candidates.
Although Glenn Close was surely outstanding, her fellow competitors were
very impressive. The voters should give
others a chance and this is true in other
repeat winner categories as well. It appears that this is a popularity rather
than a talent contest.
Great report!
