Emo is short for emotional. The emo hair style is supposed to convey the wearer's depressed emotional frame of mind by using the hair to cover half of the face.
The cut and color of the emo look is very much like punk rock meets gothic; layered midnight black blunt cuts with a streak of stark white. There is only one constant in the variations of the emo haircut, that is bangs. The bangs are an absolute must for the haircut to be an emo, and the bangs must be styled in a way to cover a portion of the face for it to be considered an emo hair style. The emo bangs can be thick, blunt cut right at the eyebrows, or thick, blunt cut from temple to temple, or fringed and worn with a side part and combed over one eye. The point of the thick or fringed bangs being to cover up a portion of the face.
The side parted hair, with long fringed bangs styled down over the bridge of the nose and covering one eye, is the style that seems to best characterize the emo lifestyle of emotionally depressive. It is this one-eyed look that makes the emo hair style unqiue.
Emo hair, unlike punk rock hair, has a strict color code. Midnight black hair color, with a white streak about one inch wide near the face. To emo's, it is this stark white stripe in the midnight black hair that sets them apart from the gothic look. Any other hair colors are not acceptable in the emo lifestyle. The stark white stripe is to symbolize the contrast of how an emo feels in comparison to the rest of mainstream society.
The true emo hair style has no body or bounce to it. The hair style is to smoothly greased down with whatever hair care product the person needs to achieve the smooth look of a helmet. The style is meant to look depressive.
An emo hair style is the latest form of hair expression for society's youth. Wearers of the emo hair style want to convey their individuality, uniqueness, and above all, their depressed emotions.
