The Life of One Who Has Lived Since the Beginning of Time, Will He Live to See It's End?

Jeremy Flores

I have lived since the dawn of civilization, and we be living long after it is nothing but mere remnants. I bear a curse that most consider a blessing from God or perhaps a deal with the Devil, but alas neither had their hands in this dealing. However this curse was not of my own doing either. Well, perhaps there was something I could have done to prevent this burden. However living for so long has made me come to realize that whether or not I had the knowledge I have now then, I still would have acted the same.

It all started when I was hunting in the forest. Back then it was just a man and his spear, and of course the occasional hag, that was on top of the food chain. Well, that occasional hag is what got me in this situation. In my arrogance and self centeredness, I pushed aside a hag when she was being chased by wild animals. I thought nothing of it, until the beasts scared away my food. That's what pissed me off, and so I killed the beasts, but then turned my eyes to the hag.

"You scared away my food! Your luck I had gathered enough food for myself last hunt, hag. However for this you must pay justice with your life."

"Are you so egotistical and selfish to punish me when all I was doing was trying to live? I curse you; I curse you with a curse that will have you live forever!"

"That is your curse? Laughable, enough of your talk, you die!"

It is then I took her life without even a thought of remorse. I laughed at her curse. I thought nothing of it. It wasn't until decades after my curse would I even understand what this curse would certainly entail; when my entire family died while I never even aged a year. I was to live forever while everyone died around me. While they happily lived their lives I was to suffer an eternal life alone.

Over the years, I devised a so far unsuccessful plan. This was the plan; I would find anyway to kill myself. I devoted my whole life to not, that is I became an immortal that tried to end his life at every turn. I tried all attempts at suicide; cutting my wrists, drowning, burning myself, I've even resorted to decapitation.

Unfortunately for me, this curse also included a predisposition to prevent my death. When I attempted to cut my wrists and I sat in a pool of my blood, a hermit happened to be wandering by and he nursed me back to health. Who in the hell saves someone who obviously inflicted wounds on themselves to die?! When I attempted to drown myself, it just so happened that it was during low tide and thus I ended up on shore before I even passed out. When I began to burn myself, with a stroke of luck, a torrential downpour happened. When I attempted to cut my head off it just so happened that a bee would sting my hand before I could even slice through my throat.

I came to terms that I wouldn't die by my own hand. Thus the plan would become a little deeper than I had thought. I would have to find another way to fall into the arms of the Angel of Death. If I knew death was coming then, by fate, I would not be able to achieve what I want, thus I would have to be unaware of how I die. Luckily, with the birth of society was also the beginning of a beautiful many things; war, murder, crime, random acts of violence. It was quite easy to find ways to have myself killed.

So, I have watched as civilization grew and corrupted itself with its growth. I watched as they quickly developed laws and punishment for breaking said laws. With said punishment, they developed weapons and thus the evolution of hatred, suffering, and of course corruption, had been set into motion. I was ecstatic with their progress. Of course there were other things that they developed, like the arts and other such ideals, but those were of no concern to me. Now that they have begun performing sacrificial rituals, I think it's time I integrate into this new thing called society.

To Be Continued.
