Employment as a Waitress

Melvin Richardson
People are scrambling to find work, both part time and full time. If you are looking for work you may want to consider employment as a waitress. You get the opportunity to meet a lot of people and you may even establish some business contacts. The base pay is usually very low but you have the opportunity to make up for that with daily tips. Tips can be substantial depending on the establishment and your customer service skills.

As a waitress you be responsible for taking customers orders and serving them. You will also have to replenish the tables with condiments, napkins, silverware and complete other duties such as these. The work can be tiring because you will be on your feet practically all day long.

Customer service

You have to provide excellent customer service other wise some customers won't return. The amount of money you receive in tips will depend on your customer service skills. Customers love to be served by someone who has a great attitude and personality and seem like they are genuinely interested in serving the customer. If the customers order is delayed you may want to explain why and apologize for the inconvenience. Even though it's not the waitress fault customers will sometimes think they are responsible.

Attitude

Having a great attitude helps. If you have an up tempo attitude and you smile and greet the customer in a timely manner it goes a long way in establishing rapport with that customer. The customer is evaluating everything about you from the time you approach their table and make eye contact. They are making mental notes of everything you do. A lot of customers will decide if they should give you a larger than normal tip based on your attitude and the service you provide.

Acknowledgment

Always check back with your customers from time to time to see if they need anything else. If you serve them their initial meal and they never see you again or have to summon you if they need something else then you just received a decrease in the tip you will receive. Customers like to have their needs met by a courteous, friendly and helpful waitress when they frequent a restaurant.

If you want to become a waitress it helps if you genuinely like to help people. Of course if you don't like helping people, it will show as soon as a some customers start to give you a difficult time. Having patience and a friendly attitude always wins the day.
