Empty Nest

A Mother's Tale

Shirley Dailey
I sit and watch the window, waiting for her shadow to reappear,
Knowing it won't, but futilely hoping still.
The gray sky presses down, the cold earth holds me fast
There's no escaping either, not now.
She took the sun with her, stuck it in her suitcase and carted it away
She took it to the other side of the earth, too far to see and feel it's warmth.
Others have gone, and there was pain then, too, but this time.....
This time there's nothing and no one left
Only me, the gray sky, and the earth, drawing me toward it's cold embrace.
I wonder if I should resist, or simply let it have it's way,
Because she took my life with her when she left
And she's not coming back.
