End Hunger: One Billion Feed One Billion Campaign

End Hunger with $1 Per Week

Deborah Oakes, NPS
Would you like to end hunger? The World Food Programme, the United Nations frontline hunger agency and the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, just revealed their new online charity campaign: "One Billion Feed One Billion."

One Billion One Billion Hungry People

To end hunger, donate $1 per week to this online charity organization for one year. According to Josette Sheeran, head of WFP, "If a billion internet users donate a dollar, or a euro a week, we can literally transform the lives of a billion hungry people across the world."

Feeding the Hungry

"The world has gotten itself in a bit of a mess on this issue and we now have urgent emergency hunger needs for one out of every six people on earth" according to Sheeran.

The WFP faced "a year of tough choices" with drought in the Horn of Africa, floods in the Philippines and conflict in northern Pakistan stretched its ability to cope with emergencies. Tens of millions more people were forced into hunger by high food prices in the developing world after the 2007-2008 food crisis.

"The problem at the moment is that WFP probably has 10 or 12 acute emergencies on its hands, each one complex, each one with its own compelling situation and none that can really afford to be neglected," according to Sheeran. Donations to WFP are down so an appeal is made to citizens of the world.

Charity Organization for the Family

Why not start a charity with your family for feeding the hungry? You and your family donate by visiting WFP's website and click on the red cup in the top right corner. This is a great experience for families to learn to give to those in need.

World Food Programme Donations Go to the Hungry

The WFP, founded in 1962, predicts it will feed around 100 million people this year in 72 different countries. This amounts to an estimated 28 billion meals.

Only 7 percent of funds are spent on paying overheads, with the rest going to food aid, Sheeran said. "Of the 25 cents it costs to get a cup of food to a child, 93 percent is for food and logistics." The integrity of this agency along with its mission, is compelling.

One child dies every six seconds from malnutrition and related causes. The WFP not only feeds the hungry but makes sure the food is fortified with vitamins and minerals. For an online charity organization that does so much, the World Food Programme could be one of the best charities to support to end hunger.

It's $52 for the whole year...and even if they don't reach that goal, they can still make a difference with whatever donations they get.

This is a great idea! But, will they ever find one billion internet users who can afford to pay $1/week?
