End of the School Year Bulletin Boards

Count Down to the Last Day of School in Style

Angela W. La Fon
When May arrives there is one thing on many student's minds, the approaching end of the school year. A bulletin board that counts down to the last day of school or celebrates the end of the school year is a fun bulletin board for May. It could be as simple as a paper countdown chain with a student removing a link each day to provide a visual image or it could be more thematic like these easy to do bulletin board ideas. Each of the May bulletin board ideas are student made and interactive. Interactive projects take the "bored" out of classroom bulletin boards.

"The Garden Blooms as the End of the Year Looms"

A flower garden count down theme would combine the celebration of spring with a count down to the last day of school. Students could create a flower craft for each remaining day of school. Flowers could have chenille stem or drinking straw stems, paper, tissue paper or fabric petals and of course a button center would really pull it all together. The inside of paper grocery bags creates wonderful soil for a flower garden bulletin board.

Each day a student could pick a flower from the garden and put it in a vase. On the last day of school, the class could present the bouquet to someone special like a volunteer, librarian or cafeteria employee.

"We've Had a Stellar Year"

This end of the school year bulletin board could be out of this world. With a black bulletin board background, students could create a shining star for each remaining day of school. Foil, glitter or sequins could really make these stars sparkle. Add an earth printable to the center with a student drawing of your school on it to give complete the outer space perspective.

Each day a student could remove a star and over time the bulletin board will begin to look like a black out, symbolizing the lights turning out for the summer.

"The Blue Ribbon Best of 2010 & 2011"

Another idea for a May bulletin board is to make a "best of" bulletin board. Dancers, singers, actors and athletes shouldn't get all of the accolades. On this bulletin board students can celebrate learning and even better, they can be the judges too.

Teachers can offer a prompt such as the "most fascinating fact you've learned the year," "the most fun you had at school this year," or the "best book you've read this year." About.com Family Crafts offers a free printable blue ribbon coloring page. The center is perfect for writing in the "best of" award.

Teacher tip: Did you know?

You can type in personalization for any number of achievements from learning a phone number or all the states and capitals, to winning a spelling bee or science fair competition. No matter which theme you choose, an end of the year bulletin board is a fun way to count down to the last day of school.
