Endangered Wildlife and Dawn Dish Soap: What the Two Have in Common?

Lori Voth
It is rare to hear about a household cleaner that is friendly to the environment. That is what makes Dawn Dish Soap a unique leader in this category of products.

Though most people know the Dawn brand for its dish soap products, many are unaware of their now 25 years and counting commitment to help the environment. Somehow it was discovered that Dawn Dish Soap products contained the perfect formula for the use of washing oil off of birds and other wildlife that are susceptible to the all too frequent and harmful spills. As a result, Dawn joined forces with several animal rescue organizations to continue that oil removal deed and implement several more programs of a similar.

Dawn believes that since humans are primarily responsible for the oil misusage problem it is people working together that the affected wildlife depend on to make a significant change. The brand's latest campaign titled "Make a Difference" encourages individual consumers to make a dedicated effort to reduce and make safer their use of oil while striving to motivate others to do the same.

At the "Make a Difference" website, at DawnSavesWildlife.com, Dawn makes it easy for individuals to get started in playing their part.

Besides the obvious ways to support Dawn in its support of endangered species and other wildlife affected by oil pollution, such as purchasing Dove Dish Soap products and keeping up to date with the brand's website, the company has set up an immediate concrete and convenient way to mark your promise.

The first step toward contributing to the "Make a Difference" Campaign as suggested by Dawn Dish Soap brand and company is to participate in the establishment of what they've come to refer to as your personal "flock". This creative term was coined to reflect the idea that birds and wildlife suffer from environmental pollution as a group, since they usually travel in teams. Additionally for a secondary explanation of the chosen term, Dawn calls out to consumers to spread the word about environmental needs to people in their own social circle or "flock" of friends.

To begin your symbolic new virtual flock of environmental advocates, Dawn invites you to choose on the "Make a Difference"website which animal you would like to have as the representative of your flock. Choices are: the Mallard Duck, Brown Pelican, Harbor Seal and South African Penguin.

Next you can select a current position for your flock such as standing walking or sitting.

Finally, choose among the Pacific Northwest Lake, South African Beach, California Bay or the Florida Beach to represent your high risk for pollution environment and wildlife habitat. Once submitted, your flock name and brief personal note to go along with it can be viewed by other site users browsing your location on the flock charting map. As of today there are 229,324 people who have made the promise to help the "Make a Difference" Dawn campaign. Dawn's goal is to reach one million.

Your promise on the Dawn "Make a Difference" Campaign website represents your personal commitment toward daily activities that promote a healthy and clean environment and reduce the amount of oil contaminants in especially wildlife habitats and waterways.

There are a many simple ways you can play your part in saving the lives of wildlife through the reduction of oil pollution in the environment each day. Following are a few suggestions as given by the Dawn official website to correspond with the "Make a Difference" Campaign:

**Dispose of oil properly. Avoid pouring motor oil or other daily substances into storm drains, on the ground or in a ditch. Instead, recycle used oil and antifreeze at a recycling center.

**Keep vehicles well-maintained to prevent oil/fuel leakage on the ground and in water.

**Place cooking oils and fats in a sealed container in the garbage instead of pouring them down the kitchen drain.

**Avoid topping off at the gas pump as it can cause gas to spill onto the ground, and the residue can run off into creeks and our ocean.

**Use drip pans when unclipping hoses, unscrewing filters, or removing car parts.

**Walk, cycle or even take the bus whenever possible.

You may also make a personal contribution to the "Make a Difference" Dawn Saves Wildlife Campaign and effort to reduce oil pollution in our endangered species habitats and waterways by simply continuing to choose Dawn as your preferred brand for dishwashing tasks. Look for Dawn's Special Edition Dish Soap product, a commemoration of the company's long standing environmental efforts, in retail stores now, available for purchase. The Special Edition Dawn Dishwashing Liquid products can be identified by the obvious: A depiction of a bird flying over the Dawn brand logo and the proclamation "Rescuing Wildlife" displayed underneath.

If this is true what is dawn doing currently to help with the oil spillage in the Gulf of Mexico. Surely a company this big can afford to donate Dawn to help save some of these animals lives'. Just like Tide was there for Hurricane Katrina, Dawn should be there for the Gulf spill. What a better way to advertise and help when the papers are picturing these animals dying and covered in oil, there's hope if we all volunteer and with donations.

They do test on animals... so all the bird-washing loses credibility to me, like if nazis would go and feed the poor every saturday while executing thousands of people from 9 to 5.

Great article. I have seen that they clean birds that have been in oil spills with Dawn, i hope they are sincere, I hate to hear that they are part of Proctor and Gamble that tests on animals.

How interesting. But Mavyn makes an excellent point as well.

This sounds like a great campaign, but it's really strange that they go to all this effort when Dawn is part of Proctor & Gamble, which is one the biggest users and proponents of animal testing.
