Ending Poverty Through a Resource-Based Economy

Lauren Todd
Poverty and the poverty mindset is nothing but prevalent in the world today. While we in America, yearly celebrate our children's birthdays, blowing out the candles and making a wish; another child's life in Africa, has just been snuffed out. In fact, many children in heavily indebted poor countries like South Africa, die regularly before they even reach their tenth birthday. What a waste of humanity, as the children there have the same creative potential as any kid in the west, but the child will be six feet under, before he/she gets a chance to realize it.

In all of modern society, the worth of an individual has become defined largely by the precise amount of funds available in their bank account. This factor alone accounts for all the stigmatization of all people who for some reason or another, have fallen into a lower socio-economic class. The method of accounting has become today's yardstick for measuring a human being's intrinsic worth. This is another way that poverty prevails.

Poverty succeeds even in the form of great wealth, because of the fact that when someone wins, another person loses and when someone gets rich, another person is left out in the cold. So for a person to have monetary wealth always means poverty for someone else. Have you ever noticed that pictures of the elite group of bankers known as the Bilderberg group, almost always show them scowling? These people are not happy, with all that money and power, they resemble Scrooge! True happiness and contentment which is another form that prosperity takes, can never come from oppressing other people and seeing their lives as expendable. This is because we are all a part of each other and so when you devalue someone to that extent, you are really devaluing yourself.

How do we get rid of poverty at its roots? Most people agree that having an exact definition will help us know what to do about it. Therefore, Wikipedia defines poverty as, "the deprivation of common necessities that determine the quality of life, including food, clothing, shelter and safe drinking water, and may also include the deprivation of opportunities to learn, to obtain better employment to escape poverty, and/or to enjoy the respect of fellow citizens." This definition indicates that respect is something that must be earned by fellow citizens, illustrating that the person with few resources is not as worthy of respect as the person with many. The conditions that create poverty, are being defined as poverty itself. Our present day monetary system is the byproduct of this mindset. It is based on the foundational belief that resources are scarce and therefore, must be rationed out. We continue to fight for scarce resources which is to say, go on fighting for jobs and food, etc. because their just is not enough resources to go around.

The question then becomes; is there enough to go around? Science indicates that there is and that we just need to harness these resources, for there to be enough for everybody on the planet. Tested theories reveal that the earth is nothing but plentiful in resources. Water covers over ninety percent of it, and just needs to be desalinized, food can be grown through the advanced technology of hydroponics, anywhere in the world today. Energy is readily available in the form of wind, waves, solar and geothermal power. Science reveals, that the intelligent management of the earth's resources could bring abundance for every single human being, on the planet. We could transition from the old monetary system to what is now known as a resource-based economy. First, we would need to leave behind the poverty mindset that we have been living in and embrace the concept of abundance, in other words, we would have to see ourselves and the world differently than we have been taught to see it. Are you ready?
