Energy Efficient Improvement Rebates Available in Chicago in Addition to the Federal Tax Credit

Loki Morgan
Will your energy company give you grants or rebates for installing energy efficient products? Chicagoland's Peoples Gas will offer rebates for energy efficient improvements as long as they are purchased before October 31, 2009.

In addition to getting federal tax credits for making energy efficient improvements you may also be able to get grants and rebates from your local energy company. Peoples Gas, which servers the Chicago and surrounding areas, offers rebates and low-interest loans to encourage their customers to make energy efficient improvements.

Peoples Gas will offer rebates to homeowners, landlords, and small business owners if they purchase energy efficient furnaces, boilers, water heaters, insulation and clothes washers prior to October 31, 2009. Rebates range from $750 for insulation to $100 for clothes washers.

Peoples Gas is offering rebates for energy efficient improvements as a part of the Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program which is guided by Peoples Gas, the Citizen's Utility Board, the City of Chicago Department of Environment, the Environment Law and Policy Center, and the Illinois Attorney General's Office.

Am I Eligible for an Energy Efficient Rebate?

If you are a current customer of Peoples Gas or North Shore Gas you are eligible for the rebates discussed in this article. If you are not a customer of Peoples Gas or North Shore Gas I suggest that you call your local energy company and inquire about grants or rebates that may be available for energy efficient improvements.

Current customers of Peoples Gas or North Shore Gas also must meet the program's requirements. The fine print is located on the application.

What Products Qualify for Energy Efficient Rebates?

Rebates are offered for residential-sized energy efficient improvements. Products that are eligible for energy efficient rebates include ceiling insulation, wall insulation, high efficiency clothes washers, storage water heaters, tankless water heaters, gas condensing water heaters, high efficiency gas furnaces, and high efficiency gas boilers. Each product must meet an efficiently level and in some cases the incentive amount is based on the efficiency level.

Energy efficient water heaters, boilers, and furnaces must be installed by a professional contractor. Ceiling insulation, wall insulation and high efficiency clothes washers may be professionally or self-installed.

How Do I Apply For an Energy Efficient Improvement Rebate?

You can apply for an energy efficient rebate online by visiting the Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program's website located here.

Will the Energy Efficient Improvement Rebate Affect my Taxes or Tax Credit?

No. Residential energy efficient improvement rebates are not considered taxable by the IRS. In addition you can still get a federal tax credit for products purchased and installed in existing homes during 2009 and 2010.

I found out our electric co-op was offering a rebate, but you had to purchase the equipment from one of 'their' sources. You have to shop around and check prices before you buy anything...
