It's a good idea to survey your home for any air leaks that can cause heat seepage during the winter months. Many homes lose valuable heat and burn fuel unnecessarily because of leaks. Windows and doors are common areas where air leaks can be found. Sealing the leaks with weather stripping, sealant or insulation can help reduce fuel costs and save energy by retaining more heat for less money. These are usually easy fixes and the materials that are needed can be easily found at your local hardware store or home improvement center.
Once you have sealed the leaks, there are other measures you can employ to save energy and keep your home warm during the winter months. While not quite so obvious, using energy efficient light bulbs can cut down on utility bills throughout the year, and can be especially welcome during the winter months when fuel costs skyrocket. Turning lights off when leaving a room and looking for other ways that drain your home of energy can save you money on your utility bills and save energy in the process. This is welcome when you are already spending a lot of money on heating a home during winter.
Heat is probably the biggest expense during winter and there are many ways to conserve heat to cut down on energy costs. One sure way is to keep the thermostat on a consistent temperature. Raising and lowering your thermostat is not an efficient way to save money on heating bills. When you turn it up, you are causing your furnace to burn more fuel and energy to heat a home. Heating a home at a consistent temperature saves on fuel consumption.
Augmenting you home heating system with electric space heaters can solve the problem of those extra cold days when you are tempted to raise the thermostat. These units can keep an area nice and toasty warm. Energy companies may also have plans that will allow you to pay a flat monthly rate based on your average consumption of fuel or natural gas based on the previous year's usage. If you can take advantage of a program like this, you may avoid unpleasant surprises when the heating bill comes each month.
It's important to remember that when it comes to saving energy in winter, there's no one solution, but a lot of little things that can be done that can add up to energy savings and lower costs as winter tries to take a bite out of your budget.
