A deflated housing bubble and a sagging national economy have negatively affected many people in the construction business. Because of the sour economy, clients forgo many normal upgrades, and they see "green" improvements as expensive luxuries. Alpha Construction Solutions (ACS) of Central Florida has found a solution to expanding its construction business amid an economically unstable environment. It works with nonprofit agencies that offer weatherization services.

Derrick Blue, who operates Alpha Construction Solutions says, "This business plan exemplifies excellence and profitability, while meeting the needs of the community and ultimately the nation." Nonprofit companies that offer weatherization services hire licensed, insured contractors to complete construction work that will decrease the energy usage of low to moderate income homeowners and renters. ACS has tapped into a thriving market that has increased because of the changed political and economic climate in the United States. Blue explains, "Many construction businesses have suffered greatly due to the housing crisis. Many have not been able to adjust and have thrown in the towel."

While Blue will work with the secular market when the demand from that sector increases, he began his venture with ACS by studying the nonprofit market and collecting contacts. Anyone hoping to launch a green construction business in a similar fashion should start networking in the community by volunteering or obtaining employment with public or nonprofit agencies which perform rehabilitation or weatherization. Blue exhausted extensive market research and networking before entering into his business. He has several years of experience working in the nonprofit industry, hiring qualified contractors, and completing energy audits.

As with any business, ACS has a specific mission statement that reflects the changing dynamic of its construction market:

Our mission is to provide the solutions needed to accomplish any and all of the construction needs for non profit agencies performing weatherization and rehabilitation work.

Alpha Construction Solutions provides services anywhere in the state of Florida, and because of its uniquely targeted market, it has ample business opportunities. Between 2008 and 2009, the federal government granted the Weatherization Assistance Program a sizeable increase in funding because the program increases jobs and lowers energy bills successfully. In June of 2009, the United States Department of Energy Secretary, Steven Chu explained an increase in funding for certain states. He said, " "The Obama Administration is moving at an unprecedented pace to award these funds to states, so that weatherization agencies can move forward, hire new workers, and immediately begin helping homeowners make their homes more energy efficient."

Blue does more than just tap into an expanding market for construction services that reduce energy. He says that ACS offers innovative solutions that help meet the goals of nonprofit agencies and energy conscious consumers.
