Energy-Saving Tips for Back to School Gadgets

College students know how important gadgets are for keeping up with classes, friends, and hectic school schedules. But all those devices that keep you running every day can have a big impact on the environment and the electric bill. Here are some energy-saving tips for back to school gadgets that will help you save energy in your college dorm or apartment.

Use a Docking Station

One way that you can save energy and keep your gadgets charged is to invest in a good docking station suitable for as many of your gadgets as possible. You can use this to charge everything and then unplug it and take your gadgets with you on the go. Avoid leaving your gadgets plugged in for longer than it takes to charge them. Turn off your computer or laptop on when not in use.

Purchase Solar Chargers for Your Gadgets

An alternative to the docking station that is sometimes more expensive but pays off in the long run is a solar charger or solar docking station. These allow you to charge all of your devices without electricity. There are some created for certain brands of gadgets such as smartphones and there are others that are designed to be universal and allow various devices to be charged with them.

Avoid Phantom Power

When electronic devices are plugged in, they continue to use electricity even when not in use. This is called phantom power. You can avoid this by unplugging your devices when they are not in use. You might be in a rush to get to class but unplugging your phone charger or laptop charger before you run out prevents wasted power. Your devices do not have to be charging for some power to be lost. You can use a power strip and just turn the strip off when not in use. You can also use this for TVs, radios and other electronic devices in your room or dorm.

Use Energy Star Products

When possible, buy Energy Star rated appliances and gadgets for your room or apartment. This will help you keep the costs down and it also allows you to do your part for the environment. You can save with laptops and computers, MP3 players and mobile phones, portable DVD players, TVs, mini fridges and more.

Your back to school gadgets keep you on schedule, get you around between classes and help you stay organized. However, they don't have to cost you a lot in energy or derail your efforts to be a more eco-friendly student.
