English Angora Rabbit: The Big Puffball of a Rabbit

Elisia Yun
The English Angora Rabbit is a beauty to see with their beautiful long fur coats that round up into balls of fluff. They originated from Turkey although not much is known about their history, and are relatively non-aggressive compared to other rabbits, and make great pets and companions because of their gentle and kind nature. In fact, English Angora Rabbits are most common as pets, and they bond great with children and adults. Other than for pet keeping, the English Angora Rabbit is common and popular for shows as well.

The English Angora Rabbit is the smallest rabbit of the Angora breed as they generally weigh six and a half pounds for the doe, which are the females, and five and a half for the bucks, which are the mature males. The largest that these rabbits have gotten is about seven pounds.

The English Angora Rabbit requires quite a lot of attention. Because they have a long, silky coat, it is important to maintain the beauty of their coat by grooming them regularly. If not, their coat may lose their beauty, and it is also not healthy for the rabbits either. The English Angora Rabbit has more wool in them than guard hair, and they are classified as wool producers rather than fur producers. Unlike other rabbits, the English Angora Rabbit has wool all over them; in fact, their ears and face are covered in long wool as well.

These rabbits also come in many beautiful colors like pearl, fawn, cream, lilac, and blue which give breeders even more joy in breeding them for a specific color. Also, they come in many different patterns as well such as ticked, agouti, shaded, self, pointed white, and solid. The different varieties in color and patterns are what make these rabbits quite popular. Because of their color and patterns, they are also rather popular in shows.

Straw and hay are the recommended diet for English Angora rabbits as they are most easily consumed by the babies and the adults. Alfalfa can also be given to these rabbits although it is important to watch your rabbit. Alfalfa cannot be given in unlimited quantities as it may actually be fatal for the English Angora rabbit, and they are also not good food for the babies as it may cause diarrhea.

The English Angora Rabbit is still a wonderful breed, and definitely a joy to have around for a pet. They are gorgeous and wonderful pets due to their docile nature although they do require quite a lot of attention and care!
