English Beagle dog is a lively, happy go lucky breed dog originating in England. The French had some influence in this canine in that the name is"be geule", which reflected the baying voice of this breed while in pursuit of the game.
A strong, sturdy hunting dog, this breed is known for the keen scenting ability and tracking skill. The present breed is slightly smaller than those of the 1500's when the Beagle hunted larger game such as deer. Listed as a sporting hound, the English Beagle has become one of the most popular dogs in the United States according to the AKC registration stats. Since they have lived in packs for hundreds of years, it is not surprising that they intermingle with other pets well. They might have to be observed around small game such as rabbits because the instinct to hunt is very strong.
The temperament of the English Beagle is friendly , curious and quite entertaining adding to the reason they are such great pets. Beagles are cheerful and like people and children of all ages. They are good guard dogs partially because of their keen sense of smell to approaching people and other animals. Many families have known the protective qualities the Beagle extends to pet owners. Intelligence is another trait indicative of this dog breed.
Weight ranges between 18 to 35 pounds. Height for the standard English Beagle being 15 inches tall, while the smaller variety is 13 inches tall. The medium size tail of the Beagle, sometimes tipped with white, seems to move graciously with meaning. The purpose of the "flag" is to locate this working dog when it has caught a scent and has its head down to the ground. The tail is held upright without an curling.
The eyes are expressive looking , large size, almond shape with a brown or hazel color. Hair on the Beagle is medium length and smooth, almost hard in texture. Any hound color will be observed on this small to medium sized breed taking up to 2 years to fully develop. The muzzle is square, somewhat short, however well proportioned with a black gumdrop nose at the tip. Ears are drooping with a rounded edge adding to a pleading look.
Your Beagle is in a group called hounds for the great attributes they are known for in the United States and Europe. A beagle won the best in show competition in 2008 at the Westminster Kennel Club.
