English Footballer Steven Gerrard - a Biography

Steven George Gerrard, who was born May 30, 1980, is an English soccer player who plays for English Premier League club Liverpool as well as the England national team. Gerrard has played the majority of his career in a central midfielder, however since Fernando Torres signed with Liverpool in 2007 he has stepped up to the role of a second striker and as a winger for England alongside Wayne Rooney.

Gerrard, has spent his entire career at Liverpool, starting in 1998. He cemented his place in the first team in the 2000-01 season, and became the team captain in 2003. He has several honors, which include two FA Cup wins, two League Cup wins, a UEFA Cup win and a UEFA Champions League win in 2005. Gerrard also recently won the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award.

Gerrard made his international debut in 2000, and he represented England in the UEFA Euro Championships in 2000 and 2004 as well as the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where he was the top scorer with two goals.

Gerrard was Born in Whiston, Merseyside, and started out playing for the local team Whiston Juniors, where he caught the eye of the Liverpool scouts. He joined the Liverpool youth academy at 9 years old. Gerrard wasn't an immediate success, going through several trials with multiple teams and never making the England Schoolboys team. He said that the majority of his trials with other teams was just a move to pressure Liverpool into giving him a contract which he signed on November 5, 1997.

Gerrard married fashion journalist Alex Curranat at the Cliveden mansion in Buckinghamshire on June 16, 2007. He has an older brother, and his cousin Anthony plays football for Cardiff City F.C.

Gerrard published his autobiography in September 2006. In October 2007, Gerrard was involved in a tragic accident, when he hit a 10-year-old bicyclist, who shot into the street and Gerrard had no time to get out of the way. He later visited the boy in the hospital and presented him with a pair of signed cleats by the boy's favorite player, Wayne Rooney.

Gerrard has been named in the top five of the top 100 Liverpool players of all time and still has a promising career ahead of him. With him and Fernando Torres at the helm, Liverpool looks to the future with excitement. Gerrard has a total of 126 career goals for both club and country in 507 appearances.
