English Lesson Plan: Author's Purpose

Will T.

Lesson Objective: Students will begin to question the purpose of a writer when composing a story or poem.

Lesson Opening
  1. I will ask them who Langston Hughes was and why we are studying him. How is he important to history and literature?
Guided Practice
  1. The poem Harlem will be read again. I will ask them what they like and dislike about the poem.
  1. Students will brainstorm a list of their own dreams. They will understand what Hughes means by dreams. A list will be made of all their different dreams.
Independent Practice
  1. Students will be asked to explain their dreams in terms of similes. It will be suggested that they refer to the five senses as guidelines.
  1. We will then combine the similes together to make one giant poem.
Closing
  1. I will ask them to explain why we use similes.
