Enjoy Baltimore, Maryland

I hope that you can enjoy your city as I enjoy Baltimore

I know that the recession has hit everyone hard. And entertainment and family interlacement may not be a priority to you. But we still have to enjoy the times that we share with our family and friends. It does not have to cost a fortune to enjoy yourself.

I live in Baltimore Maryland. We are fortunate enough to live close to Baltimore City and since my husband and I are natives of Maryland, we have found that our small city by the Bay has so much to offer. We may not be as cosmopolitan as New York or as trendy as Los Angeles, but we have a City that is seeped in history dating back to the colonial days.

We have found that we don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy our city and surroundings that we have shared these with our friends when they come to visit. Many of our friends when they visit us want to run to DC because of our close proximity to the Capital. But we have shown them that there is a lot that our city has to offer that can be accomplished for a minimum of money or in many cases free of charge.

You can stroll the inner harbor, take in the local free performances that are held daily during the summer and into early fall. Enjoy the jugglers, the poetry readings, the free concerts that are there for the entertainment of the travelers or local office workers.

Go see a baseball game at Camden Yards, yes I know the Orioles have not provided the season(s) that they should have, but it is still a good time.

Visit the Babe Ruth museum and take in the history of baseball.

Visit the Edgar Allen Poe home and grave site, there are still rumors of the midnight visitor who leaves a bottle of brandy on Poe's grave sight on his birthday.

Take a water taxi to Fells Point, for a minimal fee. Enjoy strolling down antiques row on cobblestone streets. Eat lunch at an outdoor bistro and "people watch".

Enjoy one of the many ethnic free festivals. Experience the wonder of watching the Polish, Greek, German, Irish, or Italian performers showcasing their heritage.

Every 4th of July or New Year's eve go to the Inner Harbor and here the Baltimore Symphony put on a free performance before watching the fireworks show over Ft McHenry the home of our National Anthem.

During the summer on a Friday evening during the summer, take your blankets, picnic baskets, or lawn chairs and watch the free movies at Heritage Park in Dundalk.

There is so much to do and as a family we want to be able to experience the feeling of being together without spending a fortune. I am sure that if you look around your own city you will be able to find a ton of things that can still be done for your entertainment without spending a fortune. So if you are ever in Baltimore, send a shout out to say hello......

Really interesting piece. The strongest parts are those written in second, not first, person. I have driven through Baltimore perhaps half a dozen times but have never looked around much...same for Annapolis.

Isn't it amazing, how much wonderful stuff we can find in our own hometowns? You make me want to visit Baltimore sometime soon.

This is a great piece on Baltimore. Though I've travelled through it many times, I've never stopped by to visit. I just might the next time!
