Everyone needs a little time away from the outside world and responsibilities such as work just to relax and unwind. Unfortunately, for many, taking a vacation can be costly and not exactly hassle-free. The cheaper and less stressful alternative to a vacation is a staycation. A staycation refers to staying home and relaxing in your home instead of doing normal day-to-day responsibilities. It is also referred to as a stay vacation. Your time is devoted to spending time with family or having a personal sabbatical for a short period of time. Whether you have a week to spare or just a weekend, there are plenty of ways you can have a productive staycation in your home. These staycation tips can help you have a great time at home.

A staycation can be a combination of both a leisurely event or an energizing one. Typical vacations away from home usually are a combination of the two, both with time to relax and time to do various activities. It is important to plan your staycation in order to have the best experience possible, rather than just a typical weekend at home. This time is for you and your family and you deserve to have a great time, even if you are staying at your house rather than a hotel far away. And just because you are having a stay cation, it doesn't mean you have to stay at home the entire time.

Begin by removing all stressors from your daily life such as work responsibilities, bills, needy people in your life and people that bring you down. Tell everyone you are going on a vacation and change your voice mail on your machine to indicate you cannot answer the phone for "x" number of days because you are on vacation with the family. No one needs to know you are at home for your vacation. If they did, it's likely they will bug you on your time off. You can even put a sticky pad and note next to your doorbell saying "We are enjoying our staycation. Please leave a message."

Your next step is to plan with your family what you want to do. Think about what activities you would want to do if you were vacationing away from home. Would you go swimming? Eat at a fancy restaurant? Go to an amusement park? Go see a show? Well, you can modify these activities and interests to fit your surrounding area and home. Instead of a show, you can stay home and rent movies. Instead of the beach you can go swimming at a pool where you normally would not see people you know. You can order in food or pick up food from a nearby restaurant and enjoy dinner in the comforts of your home.

With a little planning and agreeing to push aside outside responsibilities, your family staycation can be a lot of fun and a great way to recharge your batteries this season.
