Most people may think of having a porch swing means you live in the country somewhere, but that just isn't true. You can find swings on porches, patio areas, decks and yards everywhere regardless if you are in the country or the city.
Porch swings come in a wide variety of sizes, styles and materials. It gives everyone the chance to have the swing that is perfect for their tastes. Wood would be the most common material used in making a swing, with maple and oak being at the top of the list. You can also find them made out of pine or even bamboo.
Some swings will come pre-assembled so that putting them up requires very little effort on your part. Others may come in a kit that includes everything, even the seat cushions, and gives you the instructions on how to put them together, while other people may want to build their own porch swing from scratch. Whichever type you are looking for you can find them at any of your larger home improvement stores like Lowes or Home Depot.
Mounting your new porch swing will require a little planning on your part. If you are going to install your swing on a porch you will have to mount it on a roof joist for obvious safety reasons. Another idea that many use is mounting the swing to a strong branch on a tree. Just be sure you choose a strong sturdy branch that will hold enough weight.
Once you have your new swing installed where you want it you put on a good stain or paint sealer in order to keep it looking new for years to come. If you don't apply a sealer you will notice over time your swing will fade or even turn green and mold on you. Even if you have water resistant pressure treated wood it is still recommended that you treat it with a sealer.
The only other point to keep in mind with a porch swing is safety. While making sure you have installed the swing to a sturdy joist or tree is important, you should also be sure your children understand that the swing is not a toy and is not designed to be stood on. They can easily fall and injure themselves in an accident.
Make this summer a one that is relaxing and peaceful. Install a porch swing around your home and enjoy more of the outdoors this year.
