Enjoy the Red Light District of Amsterdam

Take a Closer Look at the World's Oldest Profession

Dear Auntie
Amsterdam has been famous for its Red Light District for over 700 years, so if sight seeing in Amsterdam this could be a good place to start.

The Red Light District of Amsterdam offers an intriguing and unique experience. To get the most out of your visit to the Red Light District it is advisable to join a walking tour. These are organized by Lindbergh Excursions and during the tour you will get to visit the Prostitution Information Center.

At the Prostitution Information Center you will be able to ask all the questions that you want about the oldest profession in the world and you won't have to be shy. For those that are curious but do not wish to participate they can take a look at an actual room used by prostitutes and get an explanation of how it all works and how much it all costs.

The Prostitution Information Center is volunteer run and is funded by donations.

You can also take a 1 ½ hour tour at 7,50 Euros pp and shop for art from local artists in the gift shop.

The center is open from noon-7pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and can be found at De Enge Kerksteeg 3, which is round the corner from the Old Church.

If you choose to take a walking tour you will be accompanied by a guide the whole time and will not need to be concerned about your safety.

If you didn't know, in Amsterdam prostitution is legal and there is a widely held tolerance towards the profession. The unique feature for Amsterdam's Red Light District is the way the working girls peddle their wares. They stand or sit behind red- lit windows and many a visitor has been amazed at the amount of beautiful girls that are on show.

Not all the prostitutes do this, and some prefer to work as an escort through an agency. The Red Light District in Amsterdam is a relatively safe place for the working girls and their clients but working as an escort gives the girls greater anonymity.

The Red Light District of Amsterdam offers a unique carnival feel and to keep in that mode it is great to stay in accommodation close to the Red Light District in hotels such as:

The Hotel Krasnapolsy

The Barbizon Palace Hotel

Hotel The Grand

Hotel Radisson SAS

The Hotel Victoria

Hotel Luxer City Center

Hotel France

The Hotel Terminus

These hotels may be close to the Red Light District but they are also a stone's throw from The Central Station, museums, restaurants, theatres, shopping alleys, boutiques and department stores.
