Enjoying a Visit to Bellagio, Italy

L. V. Paganini
Located on Lago di Como (Lake Como), this fascinating town seems to rise up out of the mountains. The road up is narrow and winding but you'll find the locals driving it very fast, but also competently (well, most of the time.)

The lake looks spectacular with the mountains as a backdrop. Bellagio's narrow streets are lined with canopied shops and above the shops you'll see homes, with potted flowers hanging over the balconies. The variety of shops is enormous - from trendy little clothing boutiques to gold and silver jewelry stores to art stores plus cafes and gelato shops. Pastel wedding cake style villas with roccoco trimmings line the shore.

Most of the myriad of restaurants and cafes in Bellagio specialize in local Italian cuisine and fresh fish is a staple on their menus. You'll also find many cafes offering Italian cold cuts, fresh pasta with a variety of sauces, and pizza. And, don't forget the gelato and the espresso and/or cappuccino. Enjoy your early morning coffee at an outdoor café taking in the sights and enjoying the magnificent lake views.

Be sure to allow time to visit some of the local historical sites that may be of interest to you. Numerous historic churches and museums are found throughout the Lake Como area including the Basilica of San Giacomo and the museum of navigational instruments. Lake tours are also available for short hour long trips or day long cruises. Mountain biking is popular and it's easy to find places to rent these bikes. Walking and hiking is another popular activity.

There is a wide range of accommodations to fit any style and budget. The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a five-star hotel which overlooks Lago di Como. This renovated villa offers visitors all the usual amenities plus a private beach, swimming pool, tennis court, gym, and a full service salon and spa. There are also two restaurants on the premises. Even if you don't stay there, be sure to take time to enjoy their tour of it's 18th century garden and the surrounding grounds. (Check out their website at villaserbelloni.com for details.)

Or, consider a bed and breakfast such as the Bellagio Bed and Breakfast. This B and B is well located, just yards from restaurants, bakeries, and other shops and only a block from the lake promenade and main pier. Their guestrooms can accommodate up to four people and with private bathroom with shower, a small kitchen that comes stocked with breakfast items. Every room has a TV, satellite decoder, DVD player and stereo. The common area in a restored ancient tavern, furnished with comfortable sofas and TV. (Visit bellagiobedandbreakfast.com for more information.)
