Enjoying a Visit to Zermatt, Switzerland

L. V. Paganini
My first visit to Zermatt has been long remembered. There was the switch to the narrow gauge train for the last part of the journey, our horse-drawn carriage ride to our hotel, and my view of the Matterhorn from my hotel room, which was magnificent! Whether you ski or not, this charming Swiss town will win your heart.

Most of the hotels, inns and residence apartments in Zermatt are locally owned and staffed by friendly locals. There is a broad range of accommodations, from cozy guest houses to four and five star hotels complete with restaurants, shops and a spa on the premises. Some hotels also offer a swimming pool. High above Zermatt you'll find the Riffelalp Resort, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. It's situated at the center of the Gornergrat ski area and offers marvelous views, including a perfect one of the Matterhorn itself. The resort is connected to Zermatt via a scenic cog railway and makes several trips during the day and evening. You might take the train up to the resort and enjoy scenery plus a superb lunch at their dining room. The ride takes about 20 minutes each way.

Stroll through town enjoying the wooden chalets and interesting shops. Upscale jewelry, designer togs, Swiss chocolates, and hand-crafted souvenirs can all be found here. Stop for a meal at one of the many eateries you'll pass by - you'll find anything from fondue to Asian fare. You might want to enjoy a guided historical walking tour of the village to learn more about Zermatt's culture.

In addition to skiing there is snowboarding, sledding, snow-shoeing, and ice skating at various environs near Zermatt. There is ice climbing and paragliding for those looking for more thrilling pursuits.

Ride the cableway to Matterhorn glacial paradise, and enjoy spectacular vistas from the highest sightseeing point in Europe. This is about a 45-minute ride including stops where you can take pictures or enjoy a snack.

Even if you're not a dog lover, you'll enjoy a dogsled ride in the Zermatt countryside. Guides will teach you how to harness the dogs and steer the sled over the snow. Hot chocolate and a tasty picnic lunch make this a great outing.

Check out the Matterhorn Museum and learn about the Matterhorn's African origin, Zermatt's history and the very first, precarious ascent of the mountain. An audio guide and video presentation about the Matterhorn are provided.

You'll find every type of event or festival held during the year near Zermatt. Ski races and curling events occur in the winter, a tennis and a golf tournament every summer and marathons, music festivals and a folklore parade during the rest of the year.
