Start at the the official residence of Bonhomme, the giant snowman and official mascot of the Winter Carnival. This breathtaking ice palace, the Place du Palais, showcases a different theme each year. Themes have varied from whimisical to old world to modern architecture. At the beginning of the carnival, the Carnival Queen is chosen by Bonhomme. Then, a giant fireworks display starts the excitement for the rest of the festival.
The Place Desjardins is an ideal place to go for some family fun. It's on the Plains of Abraham and is a winter wonderland with snow slides, sleigh rides, skiing, and giant-table soccer games. The park also features snow sculptures, a cafe, and a selection of shows to see. Enjoy a horse drawn sleigh ride snuggled under a warm woolen blanket as you tour the park.
Another popular attraction is Carnival Street which is lined with ice sculptures and features eateries and shops. Be sure to sample a "Caribou," the signature drink of the Quebec's Winter Carnival. This drink, originally thought to be cheap whiskey and caribou blood, is today a tasty drink with whiskey, red wine, and maple syrup.
You'll find lots of sporting activities at the Winter Carnival in Quebec City. One of the most popular is the Dog Sled Competition - watch as racers and their dog teams race a course that winds through the city. Another dog sport is the Dog Agility Competition on Snow showcasing 60+ handlers taking their dogs through an outdoor winter obstacle course. Then, watch the International Canoe Race as the canoers navigate around ice floes and other dangerous obstacles on the St. Lawrence River.
Another highlight is the International Snow Sculpture Event with over 20 countries participating. A footpath just outside the walls of the old city is transformed into a icy but sparkling sculpture gallery where artists create their masterpieces.
There's something for everyone at this marvelous winter festival. Plus Quebec City is a wonderful city to visit at any time. Just be sure to make reservations as early as you can - it's very crowded and the city fills up quickly.
