Enraged Boyfriend Kills Girlfriend's Cat

Jealousy Killed the Cat

Andrew Berry
If you have a cat, you know how it is to have that little furry friend of yours hang out with you, and be there for you whenever you get home. The simply joy of having someone waiting for you at your door when you get home from a long day at work is a small reminder of happiness that truly verifies that it is the simply things in life that make you happy.

However, Joe Petcka, the boyfriend of a Sports Illustrated writer, was enraged after a fight they had one night. During the fight Joe Petcka, age 36, left the house just to return later. The girlfriend was no longer home, and in his enraged state of mind, brutally killed his girlfriend's cat named Norman. How did Joe Petcka kill the cat? Apparently he choked the cat, beat it, punched it, and so on, leaving the cat with three broken ribs, a broken leg, and multiple cracked teeth. The attack happened on March 27th, 2007 in the girlfriends home.

Joseph Pentangelo, the assistant director of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, had this stunning evidence to tell Newsday:

"He did admit hitting the cat. He (Joe Petcka) made a statement indicating he was jealous about the relationship the cat had with the owner; that the cat got more attention than him."

In the state of New York it is a felony to kill a pet of another person since it such an inhumane and heinous crime altogether. Hitting, abusing, and killing animals is a red flag for future violent crimes, especially when they occur at young ages. However, in this case, Joe Petcka is 36 years old and should have known the consequences to his actions. A cat cannot understand what is going on in a relationship, and is there to live, eat, and be with their owner.

As of right now, the charges against Joe Petcka for killing Norman the cat are unknown, although the degree in the violent crime is obvious, and he should be punished harshly.

To give an idea on how large Joe Petcka was compared to Norman the cat, Petcka weighed in at 205 pounds and was 6 foot, 3 inches tall in height. Compare those stats of the cat who weighed in at a mere 7 pounds. Petcka was also picked by the Mets to be a pitcher in 1989 in their amateur draft, but never pitched in the majors.

I don't see how anyone could do that. Seriously does it make them feel better to hurt other beings? Give them a sense of accomplishment??? Unfortunatly I can see the outcome of this. The guy is going to get a slap on the wrists and told "don't do that again", he'll probably make a statement about how sorry and foolish he "was" and that "i will not happen again" or some line that is fed to him from his attorney, and he'll be let free to walk on the streets.

it really shows what a low-life scum bag this guy is. people who abuse animals should get a taste of their own medicine. he should own up to his crime, but instead pleads self-defense? he's not a man - he's a low life loser. i hope he gets beat up in prison

Does anyone know what the outcome of this was? Was he found guilty?

Any further news on what happened to Norman's killer? This is a sad story and unfortunately a rather common one. Abusers often vent their rage on innocent pets as well as on human victims. People should hear about the awful things the innocent suffer behind closed doors. Well done.

The man has anger management issues BIG time. We tell children to use their words rather than acting out. Hopefully Joe will learn this long overdue lesson in jail. It is horrible what he did to the cat and I hope the girlfriend does not forgive him. Move on sister.

That is awful, if my boyfriend ever did that to my puppy or my cat I don't know what I would do.

Killing animals often leads to violence towards humans later on. I hope this is taken really seriously.
