Enrolling Your Teen in a GED Course

The General Education Development Test

Debra Paulsen
For personal reasons many teens drop out of High School but still want an education. For girls the main reason is teen-age pregnancy. Sometimes it is an emotional issue. Your teen may be the target of severe bullying. What ever your reason if you have decided to help your teen enroll in a GED course there are some things you and your teen may want to know. At least mom and dad you can breathe a sigh of relief there are no immunization records or long medical history forms.

There are different age minimums in different states, so you will have to do a little research. In some states like Georgia it is sixteen and in others like California it is eighteen. While you are making notes on what to ask remember to find out if your state requires what is known as a Constitution test, which covers the Declaration of Independence.

Future choices may be in some ways limited to colleges geared towards technical and trade vocations. Keep this in mind when considering a GED as an option. Some colleges will not accept enrollment from students with a GED.

Your first resource should be a phone call to your local high school. They will be able to answer your questions about the requirements for a GED in the state where you live. Many local high schools offer GED classes at certain scheduled times of the year. Sometimes Public libraries offer pretest assistance classes too. Be sure to ask.

You can also do more research online. There are pretest courses available to help you learn what you need to know to earn a GED in your area. You can find online accredited facilities to take the actual GED course. There is a fee for these courses. When you sign up they will explain the details. Many of them you study the pretest material online and then the testing is done on set dates at places like the local library or at one of the local school facilities. In some cases they guarantee your teen will pass the GED exam.
