One of the most important aspects of home security is the lighting at the doors. Usually the main focus of burglars is on the doors. The area around the doors should not be dark or in shadows. Burglars need to spend some time at the doors to gain entry and they dislike being clearly visible when they are trying to gain entry. This is because it is unnatural for the owners to stand at a closed door for long and anyone doing this would naturally raise suspicion. This is also very important for deterring unplanned burglaries where the burglar picks the victim house on the spot.
There are normally two types of professional home lighting systems in use in most homes for security purposes. One is the dusk to dawn lighting system and the other is motion activated lighting. Many people have also installed flood lights but these are usually not properly placed and consume a lot of power and are energy inefficient. Their light is also very harsh and if they are improperly placed near roads they can interfere with road visibility. Both dusk to dawn and the motion detected home security lighting systems have their advantages and disadvantages. Let us consider these one by one.
The dusk to dawn lighting system is quite popular among many American households. When properly installed it keeps the area around the house adequately illuminated, thereby discouraging burglars. The lighting system is controlled by photo sensitive switches. The lights come on when it becomes dusk and it appears to outsiders as if the house is occupied even if it is not. You don't have to bother about switching on the outdoor lights if you are ever going to reach home late. The disadvantage of this sort of lighting is that it consumes a lot of energy.
The problem of high energy consumption is solved by installing a motion activated lighting system in your yard. Here the lights will come on when the sensors placed strategically in your yard detect any motion. They can also be made to trigger an alarm. All these will startle any burglar and force him to flee. Because the lights will come on infrequently during the night they will consume less energy and also the bulbs will surely last longer. The only downside is that the system needs to be switched on daily and is not "fit and forget" like the dusk to dawn system.
