Role of an Interviewer in Media
To become an interviewer in print, audio or audiovisual media, degree or experience in journalism and mass communication is preferred. Senior journalists often become interviewers during the later phase of their career.
In print media, starting from page 3 to politics, business, sports and finance - interviews of icons from all spheres of the society are published. Hence, industry needs interviewers who can prepare a good questionnaire, meet the stars and gurus and interview them effectively. The conversation is published in daily publications and magazines.
Similarly, in audio and audiovisual media, film stars, singers, sportsmen, musicians, artists, politicians and celebrities are invited and interviewed. The entire sessions is handled by interviewers. Hence, the opportunity is unlimited!
Before you start looking for jobs in entertainment or media as an interviewer, make sure that you have brushed up following aspects of your personality:
Speaking Power: You have to be a good speaker otherwise you won't be able to make a busy person sit in front of you to answer all your questions. And when you are interviewing somebody for television, your speaking power determines the success of the show.
Domain Knowledge: You must have a thorough knowledge about the person you are going to interview, his background and areas of work, his achievements etc. That would help you counter-question the person and make the session more interactive and attractive.
Voice: This is important when you intend to become an interviewer for audio or audiovisual media. People would listen to your voice hence it should not crack. A steady and convincing voice is what audience love to listen to.
Leadership: You might need to interview a celebrity in presence of public - live forum is a good example. Hence, you should have the ability to drive the crowd the way you want and wrap up the session as per pre-defined schedule. You have to act as an interviewer and a moderator simultaneously.
Role of an interviewer in Marketing
Market Research is different from traditional marketing jobs, yet it is an important part of marketing and advertising. Reputed companies research the market and collect feedback from users before launching new products. A group of people is interviewed to know their experience about various products and services.
Interviewers question the target group and record their feedback in a pre-defined format. Sometimes, the interviewers are asked to record the entire session too. Some companies organize group discussions where interviewers act as moderators and interact with the target audience directly on behalf of their corporate clients.
These interviewers have to be outgoing, smart and intelligent. Not only they need to have enough knowledge about the product being surveyed, but they should be aware of current affairs to make the discussion natural. At the same time, they must have the ability to make the lurkers speak.
Thus, the job of an interviewer is quite challenging. If you get to work for media, you get the chance to meet celebrities and enter a high profile lifestyle. The role of interviewers in market research industry has a corporate touch that a lot of people cherish.
So improve your speaking power, attend personality development course, join journalism and mass communication classes and start keeping record of current affairs to get a job in media or market research.
