Entertaining Children on Budget

Keeping children entertained without spending a fortune can be tricky. If iPods, Game Boys, and DVD players aren't the kind of entertainment you're trying to find for your children - you aren't alone. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for technology. I just think it's great if children learn other ways to entertain themselves in addition to using technology. I have come up with a few ways to entertain the children that are budget friendly.

One extremely simple way is going to the Library. The local Library has books, movies, and even planned activities for the children. I remember going to the Library with my mother when I was young and being so happy to be able to bring books home with me. My children show the same enthusiasm for the Library.

Another budget friendly way I have found to entertain children is to get out the board games. We tend to play our board games all year round, but a little more during winter months - I guess because we spend more time indoors then. No matter what time of year it is, though, they are always well-received by the children. (I have to admit I look forward to board game night too.) There are board games available for most ages - the suggested ages are marked on the boxes. We have even adapted some games to help with learning math. Instead of using the dice we use math flash cards to determine how many spaces to move.

Cooking is another favorite budget friendly form of entertainment for my children. Eating at home is usually cheaper than eating out, and even the smallest child can help to prepare a meal. The little ones can help wash fruits or vegetables and the older ones can practice their fractions by measuring ingredients.

There are so many great, budget friendly ways to entertain children; these are just a few of my family's favorites. It is easy to get caught up in the idea of providing the best, most expensive toys for children, but sometimes the least expensive forms of entertainment are the ones that make the most lasting impressions.
