Lake Michigan Beach
The beach is one of the main attractions during the summer. Most of the time, there are lifeguards on the beach, but this isn't always the case. Parking for the Washington Park beach area is $6 per day (as of 2010). If you will be in Michigan City for an extended time and planning on visiting the beach daily, consider getting a season parking pass. When you are swimming, don't swim too close to the lighthouse pier and don't try to swim in the marina ship channel.
Washington Park Play Areas
There are two large play areas at Washington Park. Both play areas have multiple pieces of equipment that are suitable for kids of all ages. Benches, picnic tables and restrooms are located near the play areas; however, the restrooms are only open seasonally. There are also numerous other parks located throughout Michigan City, including a skate park on US-12.
Oasis Splash Park
Also located in Washington Park is Oasis Splash Park. This is a small water park that has activities for big kids and little kids. Proper swim wear is required and the park is open for 4-two hour sessions daily. Admission ranges from $1 to $5 per person per session (as of 2010).
Washington Park Zoo
Washington Park Zoo is also in the Washington Park complex. The zoo is a small zoo that has tigers, a lion, monkeys, zebras, reptiles, ostriches and other animals. It is located on a hilly area with lookout spots where you can see Lake Michigan and the beaches. There is also an observation tower that overlooks Michigan City. There is an admission fee for the zoo of up to $5.50 per person.
Mount Baldy
Mount Baldy is a large sand dune that is located right on Lake Michigan. For the able-bodied, climbing Mount Baldy is a way to get some exercise and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Parking is free. If you are visiting this attraction with children, don't count on bringing a stroller as the sandy trail isn't suitable for strollers. Walking shoes are a must. Once you reach the top of the dune, you can go down the back side and spend time on the Lake Michigan beach.
Lighthouse Outlet Mall
If you want to go shopping, Lighthouse Outlet Mall is a nice outdoor shopping mall. It has various play areas for children, including a park-like area and some small rides for the younger children.
The Bottom Line
The Michigan City government works hard to make sure that Michigan City has attractions for children and families. In order to fully enjoy all of the outdoor activities in Michigan City, you will need to plan to stay in the city for at least a few days.
