A Kind Man's Lament

John Mario
He sits on the porch

or paces back and forth

all day long

People see him pacing

and assume he is lazy

They rant and rave

He's abusing the system they say

Yet they do not know

his trouble

They assume he doesn't try

They assume he lies

to collect benefits

Others work hard

To earn their keep

He should be barred

Why should he

the benefits reap

They assume the problems this bum

should overcome

But he is no bum

nor is he scum

He is a man

with troubles at hand

that people refuse

to understand.

Not all have the ability

to rise above their lot.

Others unfairly

put them on the spot

We need more compassion

Not revenge with a passion

He needs our assistance

Not our blind resistance

to reality

In their ignorant mania

They cannot see

He has schizophrenia!

Some blatantly insist

that such things

do not exist.
