Entree

Jose Zuniga

Sometimes the words linger

linger in my mind so long

they become hogwash in the machine

or to your ears

or silent to your hunger for them--

In that case I invite you to read my poetry,

it speaks of you a-plenty

as though you held some importance

in my heart--

You play the part of entree in my menu

but I never had a bad first dish

so you're not even bad for me

and it even sounds insulting--

please consider this--

I loved you--

but you were too fast--

Lightning!

Entree?

I'm mistaken

a chip I picked up from the floor

it was crisp--

tasting of dirt

and used gum

how I wish you had played a bigger part

of that dinner plate.
