Entry Level Job Hunting: When It's Time to Lower Your Expectations

Jim Posey
In today's economy many people have chosen to take career that they otherwise wouldn't have chosen. Once mangers are now looking for work as simple clerks. How does someone find out which expectations are too low and which are reasonable to take for an entry level job position.

The biggest factor when thinking of lowering your expectations for work by accepting an entry level job position is your present situation. Whether or not you are living on your own or you have people who can support you will determine how desperate you need a job, If you have an apartment versus a mortgage etc... If you have a little leeway in your financial situation you will be able to find an entry level job suitable for your skills, if not you will need to lower your expectations when job hunting.

Look critically at your entry level job expectations. Ask yourself truthfully am I sufficiently qualified to get the job I expect to get? You might need to invest money into education or qualifications to be able to compete in some job markets. If this is the case, you should begin looking for work at lower end jobs until you have those qualifications. If you aren't honestly evaluating your current situation you are only hurting yourself.

Look at the job forecast of the industry your interested in pursuing. Analyze the big companies in this field and their financial health. If this industry is in for a downturn you might not even want to bother with pursuing a career in that field. On the other hand, you might find an industry that is about to become intensely busy, that might influence a career change, choosing instead to pursue a safer career for the time being.

The positive side of being honest with yourself and lowering your expectations for a job you're not so happy with is that you will not have to be there forever. During this time where you could be depressed because of unfulfilling work you can spend time preparing for your next job. You can spend extra time improving your resume in uncongenial ways. Start a blog in the industry of your choice, pay off some small debts, go to school to become better qualified, and volunteer in relevant activities.

Sometimes (especially in tough times) we need to make compromises with ourselves to make it through. You can't let these small compromises deter your life's focus. Instead use this speed bump as a launching pad to make yourself a better qualified individual.
