Environment is a collective term, for the conditions in which an organism lives. Examples of which are Temperature, Light, Water and other organisms. The word has been defined from the Greek Word 'OIKOS' meaning 'HOME' and 'LOGOS' which means study of.
This word was brought into use by Reither and Haceckle in 1865 and they implied it as a study of an organism in its home or natural surroundings.
Ecology is one of the biological sciences. Ecology seeks to understand the way organisms function in nature. The objective of ecology is understanding and not necessarily management techniques pertaining to organisms and their environments. Webster's dictionary definition also seems to be appropriate, 'The totality or pattern of relations between organisms and their environments'. It may be termed as Environmental Biology.
Ecology at times is divided into the following:
Autecology: Study that deals with individual organisms or individual species. Examples of which is Tree in a Forest.
Symecology: Study that deals with a group of organism or species which are associated together as a unit. Example of which is a forest.
A natural environment is created through biological activity. A Closed ecological system is maintained in equilibrium by the process of recycling through the living system. A Simplified broad outline of this complex biological cycle which maintains the environment in equilibrium is can be easily understood.
This topic has now become one of the most important for the human existence. That is because the exploitation of the ecology has not only endangered species that live in that environment, but also endangered the Human existence as those species where helping human cycle. The cutting of forest, brutal killing of whales and dolphins, Disposition of hazardous chemical waste into rivers without proper filtering, thoughtless use of Petroleum products has been the major cause of this situation.
If we want to save ourselves, the only way we have is to think, save and rehabilitate the species in their ecology.
