Epiphone EM-2 Prophecy Guitar Review

Mike Harris
As the metal genre has grown to become an integral part of the music industry, guitar companies have been taking new chances to make their instruments adapt and evolve as a response to the change. This includes edgier looks, bigger frets, faster necks, and most importantly, a new and versatile selection for the heavy metal guitar player. Epiphone has entered their own submission into this selection geared toward metal players looking for a bargain called the Epiphone EM-2 Prophecy guitar. Let's take a closer look at it.

Features: The body of the Epiphone EM-2 Prophecy features a quilt maple wood top with a beautiful finish called Midnight-Sapphire. The neck is satin finish, and has a whopping total of 24 frets. Additonally, the frets are very wide, termed Jumbo Frets in the guitar community. The inlays are also unique. They are pearl with a lightning bolt appearance. It's clear from the first glance that this is a big deviation from the kind of instruments Epiphone traditionally makes. The body of the EM-2 Prophecy has a very different looking design, The cutaways are in the shape of what looks kind of like a crooked C. The electronics of the EM-2 are what really set this guitar apart. It has two Epiphone Brand active pickups. Active pickups are battery powered and supply an additional oomph to highly distorted tones. A cool feature about Epiphone's active pickups, though, is that they can be toggled between active and passive.

Playability: The Epiphone EM-2 Prophecy is definitely designed for shredding. The Jumbo Sized frets provide plenty of room for fast fingers to fly up and down the fretboard. The C shaped cutaway provides for virtually unlimited access to any one of the 24 frets on the neck. And the thin neck allows for quick and easy finger movement.

Sound: When the active pickups are turned on, the Epiphone Prophecy absolutely screams. You'll scare the devil playing this thing. Plus, if you're looking for some softer tones, the pickups can be switched to passive mode. This is a feature I really like about the EM-2 Prophecy.

Overall: If you are serious about shredding, but on a budget, look no further than the Epiphone EM-2 Prophecy. It's got excellent playability, some great features geared toward metal guitarists, and can make your ears bleed. If you're looking to pick one up, expect to pay right around $300.
