Epiphone Futura Prophecy FX Guitar Review

Mike Harris
The Epiphone Futura line of guitars is undoubtedly impressive. In sharp contrast to what Epiphone was known for, which is making exact copies of Gibson instruments, the Futuras all possess some additional features that, in many musicians' opinion, put them a rung above the rest. One of their more popular guitars is the Epiphone Futura Prophecy FX. Let's take a closer look and see if it belongs in this category.

Features: The body of the Epiphone Prophecy FX is very futuristic looking. It is in the shape of the classic Gibson Explorer, but has a quilt maple top similar to that of the Les Paul, with a deep ebony finish. The neck of the Prophecy FX is set into the body, and is made of hard maple wood with a satin finish. On the neck's fretboard are a whopping 24 total jumbo frets, which have menacing pearloid blade shaped inlays. The tuning heads on the Jackson style headstock of the Prophecy FX are grover, and the bridge has, believe it or not, a Floyd Rose Tremolo system. To my knowledge this is just about the only Epiphone you'll find with a Floyd Rose. Electronically, the Epiphone Prophecy FX has 2 volume and one tone knobs with a three way selector switch. The pickups are EMG's, with an EMG-85 humbucker in the neck position and an EMG-81 in the bridge position.

Playability: The Explorer body style has its advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, it offers unrivaled high fret access. But, unfortunately, I find it very uncomfortable to play while sitting down. The neck of the Prophecy FX is really what sets it out in the playability category though. It has a tapered design which makes it nice and fast. And the 24 jumbo frets allow for some great shredding opportunity.

Sound: The two EMG active humbuckers are, for lack of a better phrase, the real deal. The EMG 85 in the neck position provides thick and rich rhythm tones, and the EMG 81 in the bridge position just plain screams. Additionally, the Floyd Rose tremolo system allows for some sounds you would never be able to accomplish with just about any other Epiphone, or Gibson for that matter.

Overall: For experienced metal and hard rock players, the Epiphone Futura Prophecy FX is pretty hard to beat. It's got the looks, the design, and the sound that all play perfectly to even the highest levels in the metal genre. Tou can find the Prophecy FX in music stores for about $650.
